Luke Shepherd’s two-run hit lifts Whippets

-

BELLVILLE — Luke Shepherd hammered a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to break a tie and propel Shelby to a 4-3 win against Clear Fork Tuesday during a Mid Ohio Athletic Conference baseball clash.

After Shepherd’s twin brother, Marshall, was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs, the left-handed junior drilled an 0-1 pitch to centerfield to bring in a pair of runs as the Whippets would improve 9-2 in the MOAC and 19-2 overall with their 16th straight win.

The red and gray need a win Wednesday against Clear Fork to secure a share of the MOAC title. Due to an early press deadline, results of the game will appear in Friday’s Daily Globe and also online at www.sdgnewsgroup.com.

Ontario, a 2-0 winner over Marion Harding, stands at 7-2 in the conference.

The Colts got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on Jared Scott’s RBI double with one away. The hosts would strand runners at second and third as Marshall Shepherd struck out Kaleb Hollar and then Dave Ballinger flew out to right to end the game.

Blaine Bowman and Doran Steele both had two hits for the red and gray. Marek Albert blasted a mammouth home run over the center field fence in the first stanza and Logan Green had a double off the centerfield fence later in the win. Alex Bruskotter added a single.

Marshall Shepherd went the distance on hill for SHS. He allowed six hits while whiffing nine and walking two.

Friday the Shelby baseball team will host undefeated Colonel Crawford in a non-conference game. The Eagles, champions of the Northern 10 Conference and rated third in the Division III state poll, stand at 22-0 on the season.
