American Legion holds Buckeye Boys and Buckeye Girls State recognitio­n dinner

The American Legion, O’brien Post 326, of Shelby, held its Buckeye Boys and Buckeye Girls State banquet on November 7, 2021. John Terry, BBS chairman and Linda Close, BGS chairman greeted the delegates and guests and thanked them for attending. After a meal of pizza, salad, chips, cookies and buckeyes the delegates were invited to speak of their experience­s at Buckeye Boys and Buckeye Girls State.

Several parents and guests were recognized as former Boys and Girls Staters. Delegate Grady

Yeager’s grandfathe­r, Leo Hartings, 87, was present and spoke of his experience 70 years ago.

Grady Yeager was busy serving in the House of Representa­tives at Boys State, as well as playing the tuba in the BBS band. He said the best part of it all was making so many new friends.

Ty Cox served in the State Treasurer’s office as a cashier and also played the snare drum while at Boys State. He said he was grateful for having an older brother who attended the program in 2014, and he was surprised and pleased to meet so many kids that were just like him.

Adam Niese was the Law Director in his city, which was the same city as Ty was housed in. He was happy to learn how our government works and hopes one day to use his knowledge by practicing law.

Ryan Dick spoke of the wonderful experience he had while at the University of Miami and spending time in a much larger city than Shelby. He said the most important thing he learned was how to tie a tie.

Alyssa Deane said she was elected to the State Board of Education for Deal

City. She spoke of the two different parties, the Federalist­s and the Nationalis­ts, and no matter which party you were on she loved how both parties came together during the week.
