Lady Whippets overwhelm Ashland 70-27

ASHLAND — Olivia Baker started her senior season with a school record and Shelby tipped off the 2021-22 varsity girls basketball campaign with a rousing 70-27 thumping of Ashland Tuesday night.

The Shelby High fall cheer squads held their postseason awards ceremony Tuesday evening. Five of Baker’s longrange makes came after halftime when the Lady Whippets broke the game wide open. She was 8 of 11 shooting from beyond the arc.

Sophia Niese each contribute­d 12 points in the triumph. Niese stuffed the stat sheet with eight assists, eight rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots. Baker produced seven boards and five steals,

The visitors never trailed during the 32 minutes as they tallied the first seven points of the evening. The red and gray exploded for 40 second-half points, keyed by a 26-point third quarter.

Shelby forged leads of 15-6, 30-15 and 56-25 at the end of each stanza.

The Whippets made just under 50 percent of their three-point attempts — 11 of 23. From two-point range the visiting team converted 13 of 37 tries.

SHS faces an early-season test Monday evening at home against Margaretta in a non-conference matchup. The Polar Bears bring back eight letterwinn­ers and opened the year by besting Toledo Christian 64-57.
