Smith belts three homers in Shelby victories

SMITHVILLE — Shelby’s Sadie Smith had a Saturday to remember.

The senior clobbered three home runs to propel the Lady Whippets to non-conference varsity softball wins against Smithville by a 13-2 margin and Warsaw River View by 14-4 count. The 10-rule ended both games in the sixth inning.

The victories also boosted the SHS slate to 10-7 on the season.

Smith’s first round tripper of the day occurred during a six-run uprising in the third inning that snapped a 2-2 tie in the game with the Smithies.

In the second game, Smith belted a two-run shot to provide Shelby an early 2-0 lead in the first frame versus River View. Two innings later she knocked out a solo homer as the red and gray stretched their lead to 7-3.

During the two games, Smith also had a double and a total of four RBI.

In the opener against Smithville, the Whippets collected 15 hits.

Lexi Thompson led the way with two doubles and a single. Mallary Gundrum added a triple and a single while Kendal Parsons slammed a double and a single. Demi Hipp, Alexis Booker and Kennedy Studer each hit a double. Alyssa Neill, Trinity Baker and Maggie Bogner each had a basehit.

Kelsey Snyder worked 2 2/3 innings in relief for the win. She scattered two hits and recorded three strikeouts.

Baker and Hipp provided the spark in the bats versus River View as each hammered two doubles and a single. Neill also had three hits and one of them was a two-bagger. Gundrum contribute­d a double and a single while Thompson had two hits. Parsons doubled while Booker singled.

Gaining the pitching win in game No. 2 was Alexis Booker. Over 2 2/3 innings she allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Ashland 6, Shelby 0

ASHLAND — The Whippets saw their three-game winning streak halted with a 6-0 independen­t loss to Ashland Monday.

The Arrows broke open the game with three runs in the second inning.

Gundrum accounted for two of her team’s four hits. Thompson and Bogner each had a single.

Snyder absorbed the loss and allowed three on on four hits and a walk in 1 1/3

innings of work.

Tourney Pairing

Over the weekend the softball tournament pairings were mapped out across the state and the Whippets are the No. 5 seed in the Division II Willard Sectional/ District.

The SHS girls will host seventh-seeded Tiffin Columbian at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10. The winner of that game then travels to second-seeded Bellevue for a 5 p.m. clash on Friday, May 13.

The top seed in the Willard field is Lexington.
