Lady Whippets shock MOAC leaders

ONTARIO — Mallary Gundrum belted out four hits, including three doubles, to spark a 16-hit attack for Shelby in Monday’s 10-7 Mid Ohio Athletic Conference softball triumph against league-leading Ontario.

Trinity Baker homered for the Lady Whippets, who improved to 10-10 on the season and 8-5 in the MOAC. She also had two hits along with Maggie Bogner, Alexis Booker and Demi Hipp.

The loss drops the Warriors to 10-2 in the conference and 10-5 overall.

Shelby jumped on the home team for six runs in the top of the first and extended the advantage to 9-1 in the top of the fourth. Ontario got as close as 9-6 in the bottom of the fourth.

Baker’s dinger scored three to make it 6-0 during her team’s initial at bat. The Whippets strung together six hits in the opening stanza, featuring doubles from

Booker, Gundrum and Alyssa Neill.

Back-to-back doubles by Bogner and Gundrum were followed by an error and a sacrifice fly to plate two more in the second.

In the fourth, Gundrum doubled and scored on a single by Sadie Smith.

Gundrum singled in a run in the fifth to make it 10-6.

Also generating hits for SHS were Lexi Thompson, Smith, Neill and

Kendal Parsons.

Booker worked the first four innings to gain the win. She allowed six runs on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Kelsey Snyder closed out the game with two innings and allowed one run on two hits and a walk.

Today the Shelby softball team welcomes Tiffin Columbian for a Division II Sectional game at 5 p.m. Wednesday the Whippets are home against Ontario.
