SHS tennis wraps up up MOAC with 3-2 win

LEXINGTON — Shelby ran its tennis win streak to four with a 4-1 Mid Ohio Athletic Conference victory against Clear Fork Monday.

The Whippets complete league play with an 8-4 ledger and are 9-7 overall.

“We played some good tennis at times,” said SHS coach Jeff Kurtzman. “We still need to be more steady throughout a match.”

No.1 singles — Jacob Williams, S, def. Ryan Peterson 6-0, 6-0.

No. 2 singles — Jared Billheimer, S, def. Josh Bailey 6-1, 6-1.

No. 3 singles — Tony Roub, S, def. Jeffrey Moody 6-1, 6-4.

No. 1 doubles — Jackson Mclaughlin and Griffin Blakely, C, def. Ty Keinath and Bryson Baker 7-5, 7-6.

No. 2 doubles — Joe Williams and Michael Vogt, S, def. Ian Price and Zachary Hotz 6-2, 6-1.

“Jacob made very few mistakes in his match and Tony avenged a loss in the MOAC Tournament,” said Kurtzman.

Winning for Shelby in junior varsity doubles were Ty Cox and Carter Neff.

Thursday and Saturday the Shelby tennis team participat­ed in the MOAC tournament at the Lakewood Racquet Club in Lexington.

The Whippets tied for third with Galion with 15 points apiece. Ontario was first with 29 and Marion Harding second with 28. Clear Fork was fifth with 11 and followed by River Valley (7) and Marion Pleasant (5).

Billheimer was third for SHS at No. 2 singles. Roub placed fourth at third singles. Jacob Williams was fourth at No. 1 singles.

The doubles teams of Ty Keinath and Bryson Baker was fourth at the No.1 position while the duo of Joe Williams and Michael Vogt were fifth at second doubles.

Today the Shelby tennis team is home against Bucyrus. Friday they entertain Willard. The Whippets will be the host site Thursday and Saturday for the Division II Sectional.*
