The past month has been a busy one for Shelby Mayor Steve Schag, who updated the City Council about a variety of activities ranging from downtown cleanup work to regional planning and education.

"On April 22, we hosted a volunteer work team from Pioneer Career and Technology Center for their annual volunteer cleanup," Schag said of the April event. "They basically went down the sidewalks, sweeping all of the loose gravel and so forth and got those sidewalks cleaned up real well. I would like to thank Pioneer for their team once again" and the program.

Another of the highlights of the month, as described by Schag, was attending a senior signing day ceremony at Shelby High School on April 28.

"It was their inaugural unveiling of this day and pretty cool to see all the kids recognize their signing, whether signing to go with an employer, some military branch or college or technology," Schag recalled. "It was pretty nice to recognize the seniors that day."

On April 29, Schag took part in the city's Arbor Day event that also marked Shelby's 39th year as a Tree City.

He told the council that students from Dowds Elementary School in Shelby were featured in the tree-planting event.

"That was the first time I've ever done that and they participated in that," Schag said of the students. "We talked a little bit of Arbor Day."

"So Mr. Cutlip planted a tree, watered the tree," Schag said of Eric Cutlip, a member of Shelby's Shade Tree Commission.

In addition, the students went on a tour of the Shelby fire station.

"It was really a wonderful day," Schag said. "I would like to thank all the staff and teachers at Dowds for allowing that to happen."

On April 25, mayors from around the region gathered with Schag in attendance and representing Shelby.

"I met with fellow Richland County mayors in Plymouth for our monthly mayors' meeting," he told council in remarks May 2. "On April the 27th, I attended the Richmond County Regional Planning Commission meeting in Mansfield."
