Shelby bounces Willard in tennis 5-0

Shelby’s varsity tennis team wrapped up the season on winning note by blasting Willard 5-0 Friday afternoon.

The Whippets, who didn’t drop a set to their former Northern Ohio League rivals, end the year at 11-7.

No. 1 singles — Jacob Williams, S, def. Braydon Thompson 6-2, 6-2.

No. 2. singles — Jared Billheimer, S, def. Braden Long 6-0, 6-1.

No. 3 singles — Tony Roub, S, def. Trenton Mock 6-0, 6-4.

No. 1 doubles — Ty Keinath and Joe Williams, S, def. Grace Hall and Masyn Johnson 6-1, 6-0.

No. 2 doubles — Ty Cox and Bryson Baker, S, def. Grace Rothhaar and Cullen Hill 6-1, 6-4.

“It is great to finish the season with a win. Both doubles teams played well today. We took care of business in singles. All three kept the mistakes down,” said coach Jeff Kurtzman.

Posting junior varsity doubles wins for SHS were Michael Vogt/carter Neff and Dawson Gove/avery Mongold.

During the opening day of Division I Sectional, the Shelby netters were all eliminated Thursday.

Billheimer reached the quarterfin­als needing a win to reach the district tournament, but was sidelined by Lexington’s Dylan Catanese 6-0, 6-2. Billheimer dropped Chris Wicker of Bucyrus 6-0, 6-0 and John Evans of Galion 6-0, 6-0 during the early rounds.

In other singles play, Roub defeated Cam Robinson of Willard 6-1, 6-2 before tumbling to Pablo Sanchez Vidal of Ontario 6-1, 6-2. Baker fell 6-3, 6-4 to Braydon Thompson of Willard.

The duo of Jacob Williams and Keinath downed Willard’s Hill and Rothhaar 6-1, 6-0 and were then dismissed by Ellis and Phillips of Ontario 6-1, 6-3. Cox and Joe Williams fell 6-0, 6-0 to Lexington .
