Shelby to final game at current field Friday

LEXINGTON — Shelby plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a tie and upend Lexington 8-6 in non-conference varsity baseball Tuesday.

The Whippets (156) went ahead to stay during their final at bat when Jeremy Holloway opened the stanza with a double to left field and rode home on a two-bagger to left by Marshall Shepherd.

Luke Shepherd followed with a triple to left that scored pinch-runner Audric Kelly to make it 6-4.

The fourth batter of the inning — Alex Bruskotter — singled to left and drove in Luke Shepherd.

With James Mahon running for Bruskotter, he would go to third on an error and score on a sacrifice fly from Landon Kennard.

The Minutemen, who beat SHS earlier in the season 10-0, pushed two runs across in the bottom of the seventh with two hits and a pair of walks before Nic Eyster was brought in and collected the final three outs.

Kennard pitched four innings of relief for the win. He was touched for three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Starter

Marshall Shepherd allowed three runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk in two innings.

Shelby trailed 3-0 through two at bats and tied the contest with three runs in the top of the third, highlighte­d by RBI singles from Holloway and Marshall Shepherd. The third run was courtesy of an error.

The Whippets nosed ahead 4-3 in the fifth when Holloway was hit by a pitch and scooted to third on an error and scored on a groundout.

SHS totaled 11 hits in the game, led by Bruskotter who was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Holloway and Luke Shepherd each had a pair of hits. Marshall Shepherd, Kennard, Logan Green and Kamdyn Wheeler each had a hit.

The next game for Shelby is Friday at home for the Division II Sectional championsh­ip game. The red and gray will play the winner of today’s game between Clear Fork and Mansfield Senior.

The game will also mark the final time the Whippets will play on their current diamond. Next season they’ll play on their new field which will be located north of the auxiliary gymnasium and feature a turf infield.
