- By Emily Schwan

The 147th Commencement was held Sunday in Shelby High School’s packed gymnasium where family and friends of the graduates gathered to celebrate the student's achievements. The Symphonic Band played the national anthem to begin the ceremony followed by the Chamber Choir who performed the song “I was Here” by Lady A. SHS

English teacher Andrew Guertler addressed the class and told them to not be afraid to fail. He shared personal stories and lessons he has learned with the class. Guertler then spent time congratulating the graduates on all of their achievements and ended his address by telling the class, “I think your greatest achievement is you.” Alyssa Deane, the class Valedictorian, addressed her fellow graduating classmates and shared her favorite memories from Shelby High School. Her speech centered around the 2022 class motto: “Sometimes you’ll never know the value of a monument until it becomes a memory.” The COVID-19 pandemic started during their sophomore year which they spent mostly at home and doing classes online. Deane shared that the pandemic taught her the value of time spent at school making memories with her classmates after not seeing them for so long. The diplomas were then presented to the graduates by the Shelby City School faculty members of their choice. To finish out the ceremony, the tassels were turned and the Shelby High School Alma Mater was sung. The Shelby High School Class of 2022 exited the ceremony with hopeful smiles and eyes directed forward looking to their bright future.
