POLICE NEWS
Following are reports from the Shelby Police Department:
Accident, June 9, 12:11 p.m. — Shelby Police responded to a two-vehicle
accident at the intersection of South Gamble Street and West Tucker
Avenue. A 2002 Chevrolet S-10 operated by Wayne Venis, 58, of Shelby,
and a 2018 Chevrolet Trax driven by Lindsey Mcdonald, 38, of Shiloh,
were both traveling north on South Gamble and when turning east onto
West Tucker, Mcdonald came to a stop to turn into a parking lot and was
struck in the rear by the Venis vehicle. Both vehicles suffered
functional damage. Police cited Venis for an assured clear distance ahead violation. Accident, June 10, 1:04 p.m. — Police were detailed to a two-vehicle
accident at the intersection Second Street and East Whitney Avenue. A
2001 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Shirley Conley, 25, of Shelby, was
traveling south on Second Street and failed to yield at a sign stop and
struck the 2009 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Michael Griffith, 40, of
Shelby, which was going east on East Whitney Avenue. The Conley vehicle
suffered functional damage and the Griffith vehicle had disabling
damage. Police cited Conley for an assured clear distance ahead violation.
Found property, June 11, 4:07 p.m. — Property was turned into the police
department for keeping purposes.
Accident, June 13, 10:31 a.m. — Shelby Police were called to a
two-vehicle accident on West Main Street near the intersection of Sharon
Street. A 2001 International driven by John Cole, 76, of Shelby, was
traveling westbound on West Main Street and attempted to turn left into
a private drive and was struck by a 2014 Freightliner operated by Robert
Young, 57, of Sullivan, which was going eastbound on West Main Street.
Both vehicles suffered minor damage in the mishap. Police issued a
citation for right of way when turning left to Cole.
Disturbance, June 13, 10:10 p.m. — Officers were detailed to the area of
Carleton and Mack Avenues for a male and female who were arguing. When
officers arrived they located the female walking northbound on Mack
Avenue. The female advised police that she and the male subject were
arguing but he had
safe since left the area. While speaking with the female
she was observed dropping a baggie containing a green substance onto the
ground before quickly picking it back up. The baggie contained suspected
drugs that were seized and placed into evidence. The female’s father
arrived on the scene to pick her up and take her home.
Accident, June 14, 3:07 p.m. — Police responded to a two-vehicle
accident at the intersection of East Tucker and Mack Avenues. A 2021
Toyota Corolla driven by William Davidson, 44, of San Diego, California,
was traveling south on Mack Avenue and before coming to a stop at the
intersection, continued through the intersection and failed to yield to
the 2013 Lincoln operated by Miyo Stanfield, 74, of Shelby, which was
eastbound on East Tucker Avenue. Both vehicles suffered minor damage.
Police cited Davidson for a stop sign violation.
Traffic stop, June 14, 8:16 p.m. — An officer observed a subject in the
passenger seat of his girlfriend’s vehicle as it traveled south on
Mansfield Avenue. The officer had dealt with the subject previously and
had prior knowledge that he had two warrants out of the Mansfield Police
Department. A traffic stop was performed and police arrested the subject
without incident. The subject was transported to Osu-mansfield and
released to Mansfield Police.
Accident, June 15, 9:13 a.m. — Shelby Police received a report of a
hit-skip accident that happened on Grove Avenue near Williams Court. The
caller advised her vehicle had been struck on Grove Avenue and she was
following that vehicle because it was refusing to stop. The caller
provided the police dispatcher with live updates and police located both
units on Weidner Road at the intersection of Hummel Road. The driver of
the vehicle that caused the accident was confronting the driver of the
vehicle he had hit. After speaking with both parties and observing the
damage to both vehicles, the officer determined that a collision took
place near an alleyway on Grove Avenue. A 2012 Honda Pilot driven by
Jennifer Mullins, 42, of Shelby, was traveling east on Grove Avenue when
a 2009 Ford Escape operated by Dalton Brady, 20, of Shelby, suddenly
merged into traffic from a parked position and cause a side swipe
collision. Both vehicles had minor damage.
Police cited Brady with a
starting and backing violation.
Telephone harassment, June 15, 12:32 p.m. — A complainant contacted
police to report that he was being harassed. Officers advised both
parties to cease all communication or charges could be filed.
Accident, June 15, 6:20 p.m. — Police were detailed to a two-vehicle
accident on Broadway at the intersection of East Whitney Avenue. A 2014
Toyota RAV4 driven by Joseph Frye, 73, was stopped in the northbound
lane of Broadway preparing to make a right hand turn on to East Whitney
Avenue. A 2005 Toyota Scion driven by Alyssa Blazina, 28, of Mansfield,
was stopped behind the Frye vehicle. Blazina told police her vehicle
lunged forward and struck the Frye vehicle. According to the report,
Blazina alleged her foot was on the brake when the car lunged forward,
citing a possible mechanical issue. Both vehicles had minor damage.
Police cited Blazina for an assured clear distance ahead violation.
Reckless operation, June 15, 11:21 p.m. — Officers were called to
Mansfield Avenue for a reckless operation complaint. The caller
witnessed a vehicle driving left of center multiple times while
following the vehicle northbound on Mansfield Avenue. The caller
maintained visual of the vehicle while on the phone with the dispatcher.
Officers began checking the area and located the vehicle on Broadway
near the East Main Street intersection. Officers observed the driver of
the vehicle drive left of center twice and then stopped the vehicle on
Broadway at the intersection of Flint Street. Officers made contact with
the driver and observed signs of impairment due to alcohol. The driver
consented to field sobriety tests and performed poorly. The driver was
arrested for operating vehicle impaired and transported to the police
department. The driver was read the BMV 2225 form and consented to a
breath test which resulted in a reading of .224 g/210l. The driver was
charged with violations for operating vehicle impaired and marked lanes.
Warrant service, June 16, 5:52 p.m. — A suspect arrived at the Shelby
Police Department to turn himself in on an active warrant. The suspect
was arrested and transported to the Huron County Jail while awaiting his
court date in Shelby Municipal Court.
Dead body, June 16, 8:06 p.m. — Shelby Police were detailed to Marvin
Avenue residence for a report of a dead body. When officers arrived they
spoke to the family and located the deceased person. It was determined
that the person had been deceased for several hours. Due to the unknown
circumstances surrounding the death, the Richland County Coroner was
contacted and the deceased was taken to have an autopsy performed.
Accident, June 17, 7:07 a.m. — Police responded to a two-vehicle
accident on Williams Court. A 2010 Dodge Avenger by Kyle
Fowler-mitchell, 36, was backing out of the driveway and struck the
parked 2021 Honda Civic owned by Kyle Waffen. The vehicle driven by
Fowler-mitchell had no damage and the Waffen vehicle had functional damage.
Theft, June 17, 9:48 p.m. — Officers were dispatched to a West Main
Street parking lot to meet with the victim who stated his vehicle was
stolen in Mansfield and may be going to a West Main Street address.
Officers checked the residence multiple times during the shift but could
not locate the vehicle. Charges were field with the Mansfield Police
Department for suspect.

Warrant service, June 18, 12:47 a.m. — A male was observed walking
southbound on Broadway and officers were already aware of an active
arrest warrant prior to making contact. Officers confirmed the warrant
with the Crestline Police Department and arrested the subject. The
subject was transported to meet on a relay with the Crestline Police Department.
Theft, June 18, 8:08 p.m. — Shelby Police responded to a Grove Avenue
Extension residence in reference to a theft of a riding lawn mower from
a shed. Police made contact with the victim and it was determined that
force was used to gain entry into shed and the mower stolen.
Civil matter, June 19, 12:51 a.m. — Officers were detailed to a Sharon
Street address for a custody dispute. Police determined that the mother
is the sole party with custody of a child. The child was then released
with the mother. While on scene multiple issues with the living
situation of the child were brought to the officer’s attention. Because
of the issues the report was forwarded to Richland County Children Services.
