Shelby Jail is back open

Shelby Police Chief Lance Combs revealed that the Shelby Jail is once again open during his report at the most recent Safety Committee meeting.

Combs shared the Shelby Jail was open again, following it being closed for a brief time. At a previous Safety Committee meeting, the Shelby Daily Globe reported that Combs had explained the Shelby Jail was closed for the time being due to electrical issues with the monitors.

Combs provided an update to committee members.

“We got our surveillance computer camera replaced and upgraded. We are still waiting on an electrical vendor to install...we have a problem with power outages and power surges. What we discovered is there is no surge protection on those monitors. We are still trying to get electrical contractors to get someone to come in and put some actual surge protection in those. I don’t want to waste any more money on monitors without surge protection. We are down to one pod, but everything is open. There are no known issues right now,” Combs said.

“So, you are saying the surveillance cameras are installed,” committee member Garland Gates asked.

“They are back up and running. I think we have one camera that is down, but still have two other out of three views of the Sally board. All of the cameras in the housing units are operational, but because we have a limited number of monitors, we can only see so many areas at one time and we have some TV’S that are out that need replaced as well. We will be fine, there is no issue with housing prisoners. We are just scheduling people out and filling up all the dates until we get it fixed,” Combs said.
