OAFP Past President Anna Mcmaster, MD: Family Physician Mentorship Award Recipient

-

The OAFP Foundation (Foundation) is pleased to announce that Anna Mcmaster, MD, of Liberty Center, OH, is the recipient of its 2023 Family Physician Mentorship Award. The Foundation annually presents the Family Physician Mentorship Award to recognize a community-based Ohio family physician who, as a preceptor, has exhibited exemplary qualities and characteristics of mentorship excellence.

Dr. Mcmaster is a past president of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians and is currently a practicing physician at Mercy Health – Henry County Family Medicine in Napoleon, OH, as well as the medical director for the Henry County Health Department. She precepts medical students as volunteer faculty at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, and gives lectures and precepts residents at the Mercy Health Family Medicine Residency Program.

“I have been blessed to have so many wonderful mentors throughout my life and in my medical career, and mentoring others has become my way of paying this forward,” said Dr. Mcmaster. “In my experience working with student, residents, and new physicians, I have been continuously in awe of these intelligent individuals as they develop their knowledge and skills, and continue to grow.”

Dr. Mcmaster’s colleague, Laura L. Miller, MD, MPH, assistant residency director for the Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown Family Medicine Residency Program, describes Dr. Mcmaster as an enthusiastic, supportive, and trustworthy advocate. “She has guided me to pursue growth in my career as a family physician and service to others in a greater capacity through medical volunteer work. She has challenged me to evaluate my personal priorities and values. It has truly been a privilege to know Dr. Mcmaster and to have had the opportunity to be mentored by her.”

Alex Altman, MD, resident at Mercy Health St. Luke’s Family Medicine Residency, recalled his experience with Dr. Mcmaster while participating in the Foundation’s Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program: “From the outset, she was a role model in how to care for and educate patients. While in the midst of her busy clinic days, she took every opportunity to provide advice and encouragement to me as my career in medicine was just beginning.”

“During my third-year family medicine clerkship, I was able to work with Dr. Mcmaster again for several weeks. While she continued to provide advice on

growth opportunities for myself personally, it was really her example setting in patient care that has helped form me into the physician I am, and hope to become.”

Dr. Mcmaster earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio, now known as the University of Toledo, where she also completed her family medicine residency program through St. Vincent’s Family Practice.

When Dr. Mcmaster isn’t seeing patients or mentoring residents and students, she enjoys spending time with her family, playing the piano, being outdoors, and staying involved in her church community.
