James Edward Hicks, age 72, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at Ohiohealth Hospital in Mansfield.

Born August 17, 1951 to James and Martha (Malone) Hicks in Shelby, he had been an area resident for the majority of his life. After highs school, James joined the United States Air Force where he served for three years. He then went on to be a lieutenant at the Ohio State Reformator­y “Manci” for over 30 years before retiring in 1992.

James loved the outdoors. When the sun was shining, he could be found sunbathing, gardening, camping, fishing, or hunting for Native American artifacts. A member of the Shelby VFW and Crawford County Coon Hunters Club, James was an avid hunter, and spent many years shooting with his children and grandchild­ren. He had a big heart and loved his animals, especially his cats. Above all, James adored his family and cherished all the time he was able to spend with them.

He is survived by his loving wife Ellen (Kemplin) Hicks whom he wed on June 12, 2010; his children; Teresa (Eric) Pope of Johnsville, Carol (Tim) Keen of Johnsville, Lisa (Chuck) Szymczak of North Robinson, James (Denise) Hicks Jr. of Bellville, Paul (Denita) Hicks of Mansfield, Tim (Andi) Slone of Shelby, Charles Slone of Lakewood, OH, Robert (Cindy) Stamper of Shelby, Myrtle Hale of Plymouth, Sheila

(Dennis) Potts of Shelby, Peggy (Shaughn) Seward of Shelby, and Bob (Crystal) Eldridge of Shelby, 32 grandchild­ren; 19 great-grandchild­ren; three siblings, Bob Hicks of Shelby, Richard Hicks of Shelby and Michael (Tracy) Hicks of Plymouth; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and close friends.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sister Ladonna Fowler.

Friends may visit Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby Monday, March 11, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A funeral service will be held immediatel­y following at 12:00 PM. Pastor Art Kennard will officiate with interment held at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby.
