Ohioans told to beware of post-storm repair scams

-

COLUMBUS – In the wake of recent severe storms across Ohio, Ohio Department of Aging (ODA) Director Ursel J. Mcelroy is warning all Ohioans, including older adults, to beware of scams surrounding home repairs.

“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the storms overnight. With emergency response efforts still underway, our department is working closely with local partners to ensure continuity of services and to help keep older Ohioans safe,” director Mcelroy said in a news release.

“Sadly, the urgency caused in these types of events is attractive to scammers – who often target older adults,” she said. “While older adults are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about scams in general, it’s important after an event like this to remind those affected to be aware of common scam tactics so you can protect yourself and your loved ones.”

The storms powered through Ohio on March 14.

Following a severe weather event, contractors may go door-to-door in neighborhoods offering to repair affected residents’ homes. Projects may include repairing roof damage, clearing fallen trees, and more.

By claiming that they can begin the work immediately or that they have materials remaining from a previous job, they may pressure residents into accepting their offer immediately or handing over insurance settlement checks. When a resident accepts their offer and pays them, they may never return, or they may complete the work with poor quality.

“While many respectable businesses still go door-to-door to meet potential customers, you should always be careful about people who come to your home unexpectedly and you should always feel empowered to ask questions,” the release said.

If someone you do not know attempts to solicit business at your door, some tips include:

– Ask for written information about the company’s services

– Check to see whether the company is properly licensed

– Inform your insurance company about the offer

– Request time to consider the offer – at least a day or two

– If a contractor pushes a resident to decide immediately, the resident should refuse the offer, call local law enforcement, and report a potential scam.
