Shelby track teams show skills at Madison Invite

- By Marc Hartz

Shelby ladies’ and men’s track teams competed in the Madison Invitationals Thursday evening.

Both teams finished second in the invitational. The ladies tallied 128 points, trailing only Ashland’s 152 points.

The Shelby men scored 86 points, also trailing Ashland’s 159 points.

A trio of freshmen led the way for the Lady Whippets. Anna Will, Karlie Walp and Braylee Sturts all had first place finishes. Karlie and Braylee, dual sport athletes (both play varsity softball), had their first meet of the season.

The freshmen trio combined for 44 of the team 128 points. Karlie was first in the 100H with a Shelby #7 all-time best time of 16.76. She was also 3rd in the 200. Braylee took first in the shot put with 32-08 and 3rd in the discus, 96-09.

Anna Will ran a strong 3200 going 12:24.92 and was lead off for the 2nd place 3200 relay with teammates Courtney Stiving, Kaylin Mahon and Rees Lewis.

The veteran team members did not disappoint.

Madison Henkle, Alyssa Niese and Emma Montgomery defended their 1st place finishes in long jump, high jump and the 1600 respectively.

Shelby ladies coach Patience Lewis commented on her team’s performance.

“We are very happy with how we finished at the meet,” she said.

“Our athletes are competitors, they give their best effort when they step into the ring, jump or are on the track,” Lewis said. “We aren’t at 100% right now, we’re missing a few key veterans. This week we want to see a few of those missing athletes back on the track as we host the 2nd Shelby Mixed Relays on Tuesday and the Shelby Invite on Saturday.”

The boys were once again led by their throwers, Ferron Pena won the shot put with a throw of 47-11 and finished second in the discus.

Graham Yeager won the discus with a throw of 150-11. Marshall Moore broke his own meter record with a 5:09.92 time in the 1600. Luke Lesseuer won the 3200 meters with a 9:32.18 time.

The 4x800 team (Luke Lesseuer, Indy Mayer, Evan Reed and Sawyer Eshleman) won in a 9:00.43 time.

Shelby men’s coach Chris Zuercher spoke about his team’s performance.

“I was pleased with our effort tonight. We have a lot of big point events in the distance and throws,” he said.

“While we aren’t seeing the results in the sprints and the jumps that we would like, they are getting closer to where they need to be,” he said. “To be second in our first invite is solid. Plus to win 6 events and have Marshall Moore break his own meet record in the 800 is great.”
