Weather prompts location change for Shelby-madison softball game

-

Shelby ladies softball suffered is first loss of the season, dropping a 10-5 decision to Madison on Saturday afternoon.

The game was moved to Shelby’s turf field due to unplayable field conditions at Madison.

Madison jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Shelby responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Maggie Bogner and after two outs, Mallary Gundrum smacked her second home run of the season over the centerfield fence to tie the game at two.

Madison then took advantage of Shelby’s first error of the season, scoring three unearned runs in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Madison scored another unearned run in the top of the third, but Shelby answered, scoring a run in the bottom of the third, making the score 6-3 after Karlie Walp scored on an RBI groundout.

Madison scored three more runs in the top of the fourth to raise their lead to 9-3. But again Shelby responded, this time Braylee Sturts cracked her second home run of the season over the centerfield wall, knocking in Gundrum to close the lead to 9-5.

Lexi Booker took the loss on the mound, pitching four innings, allowing 9 runs (5 earned), 14 hits and striking out one. Kelsey Snyder pitched a solid three innings of relief, allowing one run and one hit.

Gundrum and Sturts led the Lady Whippets in hitting, both cracking home runs and a single.

Lexi Booker smacked a double. Bogner, Kendal Parsons and Karlie Walp each had base hits.

Shelby coach Sami Martin commented on the game.

“Overall I was pleased with how the girls played, definitely wasn’t errorless but they have two nice slappers that keep you guessing and they hit the ball hard,” she said. “I was proud of the fight our girls had and they never gave up. You just can’t mess up routine plays against a team that hits the ball that well and has a very good pitcher.”

“I thought Kelsey did a great job for us coming in and keeping them to one run,” Martin said. “It gave us a chance to try and get back in the game but unfortunately we left quite a few runners on base in scoring position.”

Shelby returns to action Tuesday, hosting Galion in a MOAC contest. The Lady Whippets then travel to Galion on Wednesday, both games are scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m.
