staff in guiding the team with their core values and mentorship.

The proclamation also highlighted the significant support from the Shelby community.

“The city of Shelby rallied behind the team — – showing enthusiastic and unwavering support throughout this unforgettable season,” it reads. “The community came together in a spectacular way to cheer

on the Whippets and celebrate their unparalleled accomplishments, demonstrating the strong bond between the team and their loyal fans.”

The basketball team’s historic run is a testament to the school’s dedication to excellence in all areas.

“Shelby Senior High School has a reputation for providing an educational experience that is scholastically enriching and well-rounded with a good number of extracurricular programs,” the proclamation said. “Student athletes work

diligently to improve their skills and learn the importance of teamwork and sacrifice.”

Multiple team members were in attendance at the City Council meeting where Schag read the proclamation and presented it to Coach Gallaway, who expressed thanks for the honor. Team members will receive copies of the proclamation. They also had their photos taken with Mayor Schag and the councilmen.

Earlier, Mayor Schag offered introductory

remarks, separate about the team.

“I mentioned to some of the young men out in the hallway, it’s just been such a blessing to watch this team play, whether it’s in the stands or from the comforts of my living room from time to time,” Schag said.

He praised Coach Gallaway about the great group representing Shelby.

“I just loved what was exemplified on the floor, character and class all the way through sportsmanship,” Schag said.

“And I tell you, I think my wife fell in love with each one of these young guys. She’d take you into our family anytime as a grandson.

“We just really, really fell in love with this team, as did all of our community,” the mayor added.

The Whippets’ season came to an end March 23 with a narrow 68-65 loss to Maysville in the Division II semifinals.

“Naturally, we would all rewrite the last few minutes of everything here and there, but

life does go on, I think the young men know that,” the mayor said in addressing the team. “I know it hurts like crazy in the moment. But be assured that the city of Shelby is with you each step of the way. We were hooting and hollering when you were on the floor. We were cheering and we were crying with you. Our hearts are right with yours.”

“Thank you so much for a memorable season,” the mayor added.
