Shelby softball cruises past Galion

The Shelby Lady Whippet softball runruled visiting Galion 16-3 Monday afternoon in a MOAC contest.

The game originally scheduled for Tuesday but was reschedule­d because of a stormy Tuesday forecast, saw the Whippets score 16 runs (11 with two outs) and take advantage of seven Galion errors in the five inning game.

Lexi Booker picked up her third victory of the year, allowing 3 runs (1 earned), 4 hits while striking out two.

Mallary Gundrum and Natalie Kennard had the hot bats for the Lady Whippets, both collecting three hits. One of Gundrum’s hits was a triple while Kennard laced a double.

Shelby jumped out early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Kennard lined a single, then Gundrum ripped a two out triple to right field to score Kennard.

Shelby then blew the game open in the second inning, scoring six runs, all with two outs. Alyssa Booker reached on an error, Karlie Walp lined a single to left field, then Maggie Bogner smacked a double to score Booker.

Kennard then reached on an error which scored Walp and Bogner.

Kendal Parsons then hit a RBI single. Gundrum hit a single, Braylee Sturts reached via an error and Alyssa Booker and Katie Taylor both drew walks to plate runs that made the score 7-0.

Shelby scored four more runs in the third inning, highlighte­d by a two-run triple by Sturts, and Shelby was up 11-0.

After Shelby scored two runs in the top of the fourth, Shelby responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kennard hit a RBI double and Lexi Mohn ripped a two run triple to right field to make the score 16-1.

Shelby coach Sami Martin spoke about the her team’s play.

“I thought the girls did really well with timely hits tonight…until the 4th we scored all our runs with two outs, so it could have been a completely different game if it weren’t for that,” she said. “I also thought the girls worked the counts really well tonight and picked out a pitch they could hit hard.”

Bogner collected two hits, including a double. Parsons, Sturts, Mohn, Walp and Kelsey Snyder each had one hit. Snyder’s hit was a double.

The Lady Whippets improve to 4-1 on the season 3-0 in the MOAC. Shelby is scheduled to travel to Galion Wednesday, first pitch is slated to start *at 5:15 p.m.
