Shelby sweeps MOAC tennis matchups

Shelby boys tennis swept a pair of MOAC matches on Monday afternoon.

The Whippets swept River Valley and Clear Fork 5-0.

Against the River Valley team, Ty Keinath was dominant in first singles, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Bryson Baker won in second singles 6-4, 6-1.

Third singles, Ashton Hoffbauer cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win.

Ben Wilkins and Dawson Gove won in first doubles 6-3, 6-1.

responded well to a challenge at first doubles,” Kurtzman said. “Bryson continues to improve after his late start due to the basketball team’s trip to state. Ty played a solid match against a veteran player.”

Shelby junior varsity winners:

– Doubles: Troy Baker/ Easin Gao, Alex Slone/ Braxton Lewis

– Singles: Avery Mongold, Sam Bullock, Ayden Pumula

The netters also swept Clear Fork, 5-0.

Ashton Hoffbauer won in first singles, 6-3, 6-3.

Avery Mongold breezed in second singles 6-0, 6-1.

Sam Bullock had little trouble in third singles, *winning 6-1, 6-1.

Shelby won both doubles’ matches by forfeit.

Kurtzman also spoke about the match against Clear Fork.

“Ashton looked good at first singles,” Kurtzman said. “He continues to get better every match. Avery and Sam looked great in their first varsity matches of the year.”

No junior varsity matches were played against the Colts.

The Whippets are now 6-0 on the season and play two tough Midohio Athletic opponents this week.

Shelby was set to host Harding on Wednesday, and travel to Ontario Thursday afternoon.
