Shelby ladies softball had a tough day at the MVD tournament in Ontario.

The Lady Whippets lost to state-ranked Lexington 15-3 and were defeated by Norwayne 19-9 on Saturday.

In the first game, Lexington jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, scoring five runs in the first inning and two in the top of the second. Shelby responded with two runs in the bottom of the second after Lexi Booker smacked a double, knocking in Mallary Gundrum.

Later in the inning, Katie Taylor singled on a ball to centerfield for an RBI single to make the score 7-2.

Lexington added four more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to put the game away.

Kelsey Snyder took the loss on the mound for Shelby, surrendering five runs, four hits and three walks in .2 innings. Booker pitched 3.2 innings, allowing nine runs (6 earned), eight hits, three walks and strike out. Jadyn Bowman pitched the final .2 inning, giving up a run on two hits.

Booker and Lexi Mohn cracked doubles. Kendal Parsons, Gundrum and Taylor had base hits.

In the second game, Shelby jumped out to an early lead, but a big fourth and fifth inning by Norwayne were costly in the loss.

The Lady Whippets scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Karlie Walp walked, Parsons and Gundrum each singled, Gundrum’s single knocked in Walp. Lexi Booker then laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Parsons and make it 2-0.

Norwayne scored a run in the top of the second, but Shelby answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Katie Taylor singled, Kennedy Studer walked and Natalie had a bunt single to load the bases. Shelby then took advantage of two Norwayne errors to score two runs and made the score 4-1 after two.

Norwayne scored a single run in the third, but then blew the game open, scoring ten runs in the fourth inning. Shelby answered with five of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but the Knights scored seven more runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away.

Lexi Booker took the loss, allowing nine runs, 12 hits and four walks in three innings.

Snyder gave up three runs and five hits. Bowman gave up seven runs and six hits. Alyssa Booker pitched a scoreless inning.

Mallary Gundrum had a big day at the plate, hitting a triple, double and single. Gundrum also had three RBIS. Taylor smacked two hits including a double and a RBI. Kennard also had two hits. Maggie Bogner and Parsons each had a base hit.

Shelby coach Sami Martin spoke about her team’s play.

“Both teams were really good at the plate. We tried every pitcher we had and they just adjusted every single time,” Martin said.

“I also felt like it was a day of us hitting right to people and our opponents just found every gap,” Martin said. “Hoping we can learn from the weekend, but also have a short memory because we have a rematch with Lexington and two huge league games vs. River Valley.”

The Lady Whippets drop to 8-3 on the season. Shelby was set to host Lexington on Monday, travels to River Valley on Tuesday, and then hosts River Valley on Wednesday.
