The Shelby girls/boys track teams competed in the always tough Triway Invite on Friday evening at Wooster Triway High School.

The Lady Whippets finished 8th (54.50 points), and the boys finished 10th (36 points). Karlie Walp won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.78.

The girls 4x800 relay team (Will, Anna, Schwall, Kailyn, Montgomery, Emma and Cundiff, Channon) placed second with a time of 10:19.47.

Braylee Sturts had a solid night in the throwing events, placing 4th (108-4) in the discus and 5th (36-0) in the shot put, a new PR by 2 feet in the shot put.

Placing fourth were Anna Will (1600 meters), Kailyn Schwall (3200 meters), Alyssa Niese (high jump).

Shelby girls coach Patience Lewis spoke about her team’s performance.

“Karlie Walp was our sole first-place finisher for the night; she’s very competitive,” Lewis said. “Then in the throws, Braylee Sturts had a huge PR in the shot, improving 2 feet from her last effort.”

On the track, the Shelby distance squad faced some strong competition, Lewis said.

“Anna Will had a great PR in the 1600 meter, running with a very competitive group. Kaylin Mahon (400) and Courtney Stiving (300H) both added to the list of PRS for the night,” Lewis said.

“We’re at the point in the season when we need to figure out who will be where for the league meet,” she said. ”This week we’ll see our seniors compete for their last time at home.”

Marshall Moore finished third in the 1600 meters, Luke Lesseuer fourth, and Graham Yeager fourth in the discus. Shelby boys coach Chris Zuercher said, “Triway is a tough meet.

“The state champion from last year with other all Ohioans in throws made the throwing events crazy tough. Luke and Marshall ran well in the mile,” Zuercher said.

Shelby almost won that race, Zuercher said. “Luke got tied up in the last 150 while leading,” Zuercher said. “Marshall ran back and raced well after being in 4x8. Ferron and Graham keep doing what they need to do and will be big at the end of the season. Indy’s looking like Indy again. Indy ran a nice 4x8 leg and 3200.”

It was nice to get Sean Finnegan back, Zuercher said.

“He had a nice 3200. That was his first race in a few weeks after being hurt,” Zuercher said.
