Shelby scores 18 runs in victory over Clyde

Shelby Lady Whippets softball run ruled Clyde 18-7 on Monday evening in a nonconfere­nce game.

The Lady Whippets banged out 21 hits, smashed four home runs and two doubles in the lopsided win.

Mallary Gundrum’s bat was on fire. Gundrum smashed two home runs, a double, a single and knocked in six runs in the game.

Braylee Sturts was a perfect 4-4 at the plate, smack a home run, double, two singles and two RBIS. Kendal Parsons drilled a home run, a single and two RBIS.

Lexi Booker picked up the win on the mound for Shelby. Booker allowed seven runs (only two earned), eight hits, two walks and a strike out.

Shelby coach Sami Martin spoke about her team’s victory.

“The girls were really seeing the ball tonight, hitting for a lot of power,” Martin said. “There are still some things on the bases and field we need to clean up, giving up 7 runs and only two being earned. But it is always a good night when you can get 21 hits.”

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Shelby’s two runs came off the bat of Gundrum, after Karlie

Walp reached base on an error, Gundrum smashed a home run over the left field fence.

The Lady Whippets then took control, scoring five times in the second inning.

Sturts doubled, Maggie Bogner singled, Walp singled to knock in Sturts.

Gundrum then belted a double to plate Bogner and Walp. Kennedy Studer reached on an error, Katie Taylor laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Gundrum and Natalie Kennard knocked in Studer to make it 7-2.

Shelby scored two more in the third. Sturts smashed a homer over the left field fence and Bogner scored on an error, making the score 9-2.

Clyde scored three runs in the top of the fourth, but Shelby answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, increasing their lead to 13-5.

Clyde scored two in the top of the fifth, but Shelby ended the game, scoring five in the bottom of the fifth. Gundrum ended the game with a two run blast over the centerfiel­d wall to give Shelby the 18–7 victory.

The Lady Whippets now have two huge conference games versus Clear Fork. Both teams are undefeated in conference play, with identical 8-0 records. Shelby was hosting Clear Fork on Tuesday night and travels to Clear Fork on Wednesday.

Both games are set to begin at 5:15 p.m.
