Tough night for Shelby baseball at Clear Fork
Shelby varsity baseball suffered a 10-2 defeat to Clear Fork on Wednesday evening at Clear Fork.
A brutal first inning was the difference in the conference game. The Whippets gave up eight runs, committed three errors, walked three, hit a batter and had a passed ball in the first.
Shelby coach Jon Amicone did not mince words about the first inning.
“This one was a total failure by the head coach to have his team ready to play,” he said. “We weren’t ready that first inning, and they jumped on us. I have to be better at getting our guys ready to play. They are a great team, and they made us pay.”
“I appreciate the fight to avoid the run rule, but we have higher standards in our program than that,” Amicone said.
The Whippets bats were silent most of the night, striking out 16 times in the game.
The Whippets did manage two runs in the third inning. Caden Dorsey led off with a single. Alex Bruskotter singled a batter later and both scored on a two-run double by Quinton Albert.
Karsen Homan took the loss on the mound, surrendering eight runs (6 earned), four hits and walking three in an inning.
Canden Dorsey pitched a solid five innings of relief. Dorsey held Clear Fork to one run, four hits and walking one.
Amicone spoke about Dorsey’s relief appearance. “Canden Dorsey was sensational in relief. He gave us five strong innings and showed great leadership,” Amicone said.
Maverick Noel had two base hits for Shelby. Albert and Eli Schwemley both smacked a double, Albert had both RBIS for the Whippets. Nic Eyster, Alex Bruskotter and Dorsey all had singles.
The Whippets fell to 8-4, 4-2 on the season and were hosting the Colts on Thursday night at Whippet Athletic Complex, first pitch set for 5:15 p.m.
