Shelby girls track claimed its fourth consecutive Mid-ohio Athletic Conference championship Thursday evening in a downpour at Marion Harding.

The boys had a rough day, finishing eighth.

The girls claimed their fourth title with 135 points, outdistancing Ontario (118) and Galion (104).

The boys finished with 48 points.

Princess Timko, having a breakout season in the sprints, was a double winner for Shelby, capturing the 100 meter (12.63) and 200 meter dash (26.61).

Chanon Cundiff claimed the 800 meters (2:33.21), 4x100 relay took first and Madison Henkel jumped 17-09.50 to win the long jump.

Anna Will (1600 meters and 3200 meters), Alyssa Niese (high jump) were second place finishers for the girls.

The 4x800 boys relay claimed second in a tightly contested race that saw Ontario edge the Whippet relay team 8:02:22 to 8:02.57. Graham Yeager took second place in the discus with a 148-04 throw.

Shelby girls coach Patience Lewis spoke about her team’s winning performance.

“I am beyond proud of these ladies. They showed up in the wettest meet of the year,” Lewis said. “Everyone was drenched, teeth chattering, soaking wet and they were able to put the desire to shut down the obstacles and compete and come out champions.”

Shelby boys coach Chris Zuercher was upbeat heading into the district meet, May 16/18 at Ontario.

“We scored points in the areas that we knew we could today,” Zuercher said. “The event of the day was probably the 4x800. We had a shootout with Ontario. Both of our times broke the 4x800 MOAC record set by us last year by over 3 seconds. I’m extremely happy were the 4x8 is right now.”

“Ontario is sitting with the second fastest time in the State and we are fifth,” Zuercher said. “We just put the 4x800 back together last Friday, because we have had our guys sick and banged up.”

“I’m extremely excited to see what we can do in a few weeks,” he said. “We are looking forward to the tournament as we feel we are in a better place than we were even last year with our third place finishing 4x800 team at State last year.”

“The throwers continued to score points and that is all you can ask of Ferron and Graham,” Zuercher said. “We look forward to getting them to Regional and seeing what happens there.”
