JBU teams lose at Wayland Baptist
PLAINVIEW, Texas — In what was anticipated as a heavyweight conference matchup, Wayland Baptist (Texas) received a gamehigh 46 points from Jade Jones and the Flying Queens shot 55.1 percent from the floor, handing the No. 18 John Brown University women’s basketball team a 10072 loss inside the Hutcherson Center on Saturday afternoon.
“Very disappointed in how we played,” said JBU women’s coach Jeff Soderquist. “I thought WBU came out from the very start and wanted it more. We are still a very good team, but we just did not show up and we need to learn how to play when others are out to beat us.”
On its way to a seventh straight win, the Flying Queens (12-2, 3-1 SAC) shot 72 percent in the third quarter en route to a 55.1 percent mark in the contest. WBU led by 12, 17-5, midway through the first quarter and never looked back.
The hosts put up 31 points in the third quarter and led by
as many as 33 late in the fourth quarter.
Senior Kodee Powell hit five 3-pointers to lead John Brown (10-5, 2-2 SAC) with 17 points. Sophomore Baily Cameron added 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor while junior Jana Schammel contributed 10 points and five rebounds in the loss.
The Golden Eagle starters never got it going offensively, as the quintet combined for a 15-of-48 mark from the field (31.3 percent).
The Flying Queens boasted Jones, who hit 21of-29 shots from the floor attempted, totaling nearly half of WBU’s 100 points on the afternoon. Jones also grabbed nine boards and dished out five assists in the win.
Nina Sato added 18 points and nine caroms for the hosts while Maci Merket scored 14 points off the bench.
John Brown committed 26 turnovers, allowing Baptist to score 31 of its 100 points as a result. Jones and the hosts controlled the paint to the tune of 52-16.
The Golden Eagles continue their four-game road swing in Waxahachie, Texas, at 6 p.m. on Thursday in a 6 p.m. game against Southwestern Assemblies of God.
