Summer Reading is going strong! We have had great participation in the activities and programs this summer. Remember, sign-up for the program continues through Saturday, July 6. Parents or caretakers can sign up children ages 3-17 at the library or on-line. Participants will be eligible for incentives every week if they have read three or more hours that week. Our ending celebration will be Saturday, July 27. There will be a small meal, activities, and drawings for participants who have read three or more hours during the summer. Reading logs must be turned in on or before Tuesday, July 23, to be eligible for the prizes.

Family programs are held at 11 a.m. in the library. July’s family programs include:

Adults, remember you can sign up for a prize as well! The prize is a book bag. Books must be checked out through the library or Library2Go. When you have read your book, fill out the slip that goes in the locked box located at the front desk.

Adults, mark your calendars for Thursday, Aug. 1. We will hold a Stargazing event at City Lake. The event will start at 9 p.m. If you have binoculars or a telescope, you are welcome to bring it with you. David Cater will guide us as we look and see the stars and the planets. Please bring friends and family with you. Be sure to bring bug spray with you or apply it before you come. The weather date will be Thursday, Aug. 8.

The books for the July adult book clubs are as follows:

• Adult Reading Group — This group will meet Monday, July 8, at 7 p.m. to discuss “They May Not Mean To, But They Do” by Cathleen Schine.

• Morning Book Club — This group will meet Tuesday, July 16, to discuss “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams.

Copies of these books are available at the library while they last. You may also be able to access a copy through Library2Go.

Mark Saturday, July 20, on your calendars as this is the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took mankind’s first steps on the moon. Neil Armstrong declared, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Astronaut Michael Collins flew the command module while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin safely landed the Apollo Lunar module Eagle on the moon. The library has books and videos about Apollo 11 as well as other space explorations.

We have some children making great strides on their way to reading 1,000 Books. This program is available to all children who have not started kindergarten. There are prizes that will be given out as they get closer to the 1,000-book goal. We plan to have a graduation ceremony for those who have completed the program January 2020.

The Adult Reading Challenge will continue through 2019. This challenge involves reading books of different genres, different time periods, etc. We encourage you and your friends to participate. Make it a friendly competition and have fun reading books that you normally would not read!
