When the science journalist traveled to Alaska to research her

first book, The Hidden Lives of Owls, she wasn’t quite prepared for biting winds and freezing temperatures in the middle of summer. But it was worth it to see the bright white snowy owls, “which stick out like a beacon against the brown tundra.” She revisits the magnificent animals in “Flight of the Hunter” (p. 38). Calvez’s second book, The Breath of a Whale, will be out next year.
