The longtime science writer put his MIT degree in earth and planetary sciences to use for “Unlocking the Solar System” (p. 32). He profiled Scott Bolton, a pioneering space physicist and winner of this year’s Ingenuity Award in physical sciences. Irion said of Bolton’s work, “There’s so much we don’t know about the outer solar system. It takes enormous creativity and daring to design a mission that will explore it in a brand-new way.”
