Through­out his ca­reer as a writer, the An­ge­leno has cov­ered “how peo­ple from hum­ble back­grounds find ways to be­come ac­tors in the civic drama and pub­lic de­bate.” That’s why he was drawn to writ­ing about the or­ga­niz­ers of the Alianza Na­cional de Cam­pesinas and “their jour­ney into a sense of their own power”

(p. 48). A for­mer Los An­ge­les Times re­porter, whose break­ing news team won a Pulitzer Prize for re­port­ing on the 1992 Los An­ge­les ri­ots, To­bar is now a pro­fes­sor at UC Irvine.
