Victor J. Blue

The photojournalist first traveled to Afghanistan in 2009 to document the counterinsurgency. On one of his six trips there, he became close with Manuel Jimenez, a Marine who had to overcome a serious injury (p. 30). “Often we look at vets one-dimensionally—either as heroes every one, or as damaged goods,” Blue says. “We have to recognize them as real, multifaceted individuals.”
