Britain’s population of yellowhamm­ers decreased by more than 50 percent in the late 20th century, in part because agricultur­e has gobbled up rural hedgerow habitats. But the bird is still the country’s third-most common hedge-dweller. The Royal Society

for the Protection of Birds recommends waiting to trim hedges until September to avoid

nesting yellowhamm­ers.
