GH: Dominic Zamprogna Returns!
■ Dominic Zamprogna, who exited GH as Dante in June after a 9-year run, is back on November 12 to take part in a special hour focused on Maurice Benard’s Sonny (see page 6).
His comeback was set in motion, he reports, “When I had dinner with Frank [Valentini, executive producer] back in August, just kind of a meeting of the minds, to figure out where we were when the dust settled from me leaving. Nothing needed to be smoothed out, he just wanted to let me know a couple things. He said at the time that they weren’t going to recast, they were sorry that I had left and that the door was open. He said, ‘Would you entertain coming back at some point?’ And I said, ‘Of course!’ Like two weeks later, he was like, ‘Hey, we’re going to do this special episode, and we want you to come back.’ They sent me the outline and I kind of dug
the idea and that was kind of it; it became the plan. It’s just one day and I’m excited to go back.”
The actor was flattered by GH’S interest. “I was super-touched that the show came to me and wanted me to be a part of this thing for Maurice,” he enthuses. “It’s a special episode for him and they could just as easily have said, ‘Dude’s gone, we’re going to make it about Maurice and one of Sonny’s other kids.’ And the script is pretty cool. I think people are going to like it a lot. It’s fun.”
Some of his castmates learned about his return when Dante’s name appeared in the script. “I think most people didn’t know that this was happening,” he says. “Lisa [Locicero, Olivia] knew, because I think Frank was keeping her apprised, and Maurice knew; we talked about it. But Wil [devry, Julian] texted me the other day with a picture of the script. He was like, ‘What the hell?!’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll be back for one day!’ He was pretty surprised.”
Given the brevity of his reprisal, Zamprogna says, “I hope that the fans are excited and not disappointed that it’s just one episode for now. I don’t want to mislead people by saying, ‘I’m back.’ But I’m looking forward to it, for sure.”
