2002
Rex and his twin sister, Cassie, crash-landed in
Salem during a meteor shower.
The pair, known as The Gemini
Twins, were scantily dressed and didn’t speak. They were befriended by Belle and Shawn, who, thinking they were aliens, taught them English. Belle named the pair Rex and Cassie.
Once they were discovered, the twins were taken in for assessment by the government, and tests revealed they were genetically engineered. John found a key that unlocked the matching bracelets Rex and his sister wore. Beneath them were a set of tattoos, which, when put together, resembled The Phoenix — a symbol long associated with the Dimeras. Agent Spector agreed to release the twins, but only if they had a guardian. Tony was awarded custody of the duo. Rex and Cassie, however, put their trust in Professor Putnam (actually Stefano’s devoted scientist, Dr. Rolf), who programmed them to harm anyone who threatened the Dimeras.
2003
Rex and Cassie were originally believed to be Tony and Marlena’s biological children after Tony’s rare blood type matched Cassie’s, and Marlena recalled giving birth to the pair. The twins began to lead a normal life. Rex’s friendship with Mimi progressed when they shared their first kiss at a carnival and began dating. While embarking on a school project with Mimi that involved collecting DNA samples, Rex learned that he and Belle weren’t related, which ruled out Marlena as his mother. Then, a sample of Tony’s blood negated him as Rex’s father. Meanwhile, Sami’s DNA revealed that she was a relative, so Rex deduced that Roman was his dad. He confronted Dr. Rolf about his mother’s identity, but Rolf refused to tell him. A fight ensued, and Rolf fell and “died”. Mimi helped Rex cover it up. Rex and Mimi made love for the first time at Lookout Point. Rex shared his findings about Roman with Cassie, but urged her to keep mum. After further investigation, Rex discovered that Kate was his and Cassie’s mother, and stopped Cassie from sleeping with Lucas, who was now her half brother. Rex began experiencing recurring headaches and lashed out at Mimi. She threatened to break up with him. When Bo and Hope were violently attacked at a fashion show, Rex was the prime suspect. Then, after Abe and Jack became victims of the Salem Stalker, Rex was arrested for the murders. He passed a lie detector test and was cleared. Sami learned the truth about Rex and Cassie’s parentage and revealed it to all of Salem. As Rex came to terms with everyone knowing he wasn’t a Dimera, Cassie was killed by the Salem Stalker. Rex was devastated.
2004
Roman was killed by the Salem Stalker just as Rex was embracing life as a Brady. After, he took part in a circus benefit where he was forced to rescue Mimi after she passed out on the high wire. Months later, Rex was thrilled when it was revealed that Cassie, Roman and all the other Stalker victims were alive, and living on the island of Melaswen. After reuniting with his twin, Rex asked Bonnie for Mimi’s hand in marriage. When he got cold feet proposing, Mimi turned the tables and popped the question to him. Rex turned her down, explaining he wanted to be financially stable before tying the knot. Mimi discovered she was pregnant and decided to abort the baby without telling Rex, because she had overheard him saying he wasn’t ready for kids.
2005
Rex and Mimi finally got engaged and planned to wed. Their plans were interrupted when Rex headed off to Iraq with Shawn, Lucas and Brady to save a captured Philip. By the time Rex returned, Mimi informed him she couldn’t marry him, because she was going to jail for the attempted murder of Jan. Rex found video footage that cleared Mimi, but the couple never made it down the aisle. After Rex overheard Mimi and Belle fighting,
Mimi came clean with Rex about the abortion. Feeling hurt and betrayed, he left Mimi — and Salem.
