STEVE AND KAYLA, DAYS

(Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans)

Soap Opera Digest - - ROUNDUP -

Patch and his “Sweetness” are one of the biggest couples to come out of Salem, and by a landslide, their fans’ favorite moment was when a mute Kayla regained her ability to speak during their 1988 wedding. Kayla was using sign language to communicate her vows, with sister/matron of honor Kim speaking them aloud in her stead. Midway through, Kayla hesitated, and Steve signed the word “courage” to her. She then stated, “I, Kayla, take you, Steve, to be my husband,” as he practically melted with joy. “One of my favorite scenes ever,” tweeted a fan. “They were the ideal of love in those moments.”

“It was just romantic soap perfection,” another reader concluded. Another moment from that same year also garnered a lot of votes: Steve singing, and signing, “The Rose” to

Kayla when she lost her hearing. The scene “will leave me in a puddle of tears every single time I see it,” sighed one fan.
