Long-suffering “Hevon” fans had just gotten nearly every item on their wish list checked off (the couple was back together, in love and expecting a baby) when a car crash brought Devon and Hilary’s love story — and Hilary’s life — to a sudden and tragic end. The story’s leads, Bryton James and the exiting Mishael Morgan, brought all the heartfelt soapy goodness to their characters’ final chapter, as Devon and Hilary first learned that their child had not survived, then reckoned with the news that she would not overcome her internal injuries. After Hilary shared poignant bedside moments with her loved ones (and not-so-loved ones), a shattered Devon insisted that they marry in her hospital room. The sight of the doomed bride in her wedding gown as her life ebbed away added heartbreaking urgency to the nups. Alone with Devon post-“i do’s”, Hilary murmured, “I’m just happy that I get to spend the rest of my life with you,” and he cradled her in his arms until she took her last breath. It was a devastating and beautiful finale.
