I’ve been watching daytime soaps for over 30 years. While there have been many characters, stories and actors that I have enjoyed, I have never felt the need to email a publication before. I feel compelled today, however, to write to you in support of one of the best pairings I have ever seen on daytime television. Y&R’S Billy Abbott and Phyllis Summers were two characters that I never envisioned as a viable pairing, but the chemistry between Gina Tognoni and Jason Thompson is absolutely impossible to ignore. Since Thompson’s debut as Billy, the natural connection and ease between the actors was obvious. “Philly”, as a couple, was mesmerizing from the beginning of their build in 2016 through their breakup and eventual reunion in 2017. The actors continued to impress until, much to my disappointment, they were unceremoniously dismantled earlier this year. Fans have deeply invested in these characters and the love story the show masterfully created, but they also recognize the impressive array of stories made possible by the pair of talented actors involved. Gina and Jason have the type of chemistry that cannot be matched, created or built over time. They excel at any type of story and/or scene they are given and leave viewers wanting to see more of them together after each and every interaction. While I have not always agreed with the decisions of the writers regarding “Philly’s” storyline (Summer’s involvement was a total miss), I could forgive all past transgressions if Y&R would reunite “Philly” and capitalize on the most compelling couple and story I have seen in years.

OVER AND OUT?
I am so disappointed in the storyline for Eric on DAYS. What happened to Jennifer? Surely he still has some feelings for her. Is he such a wishy-washy person that he can go from one love to another new interest that fast? Those two had a sweet and beautiful chemistry. I sense nothing between Sarah and him, probably because my loyalty is to Jennifer and
how her story with him has suddenly been completely dropped. The new stories are good but the writers dropped the ball on this one. Thanks for “listening”.

VALUABLE PLAYER
What in the world are the writers at DAYS thinking? They are driving away their best characters and I can’t understand why.
It’s hard to find good soap talent that really sells a story. Years ago, the writers would create stories that took forever to come to a conclusion, but the payoff was worth it. Lately, the stories feel rushed and incomplete. For example, Bryan R. Dattilo as Lucas has carried this show so many times over the years, and his performances were amazing as a raging alcoholic. But here we are at a crossroads and the writers are going to take him off the canvas? They built up Lucas and Chloe, she has the club, they just professed their love for one another, so he should be marrying her! Allie should be coming here. All of that is a much better dynamic then sending Lucas to Italy! Plus, we have Steve, who is MIA, Nicole being killed off ... It’s all oh, so wrong!

THE EYES HAVE IT
I am so impressed with Jon Lindstrom’s portrayal of Ryan on GH. He does something with just his eyes that is chilling — such a contrast to the way Kevin is. Reminds me of how the talented Steve Burton’s [Jason] eyes can have that flat “Stone Cold” look in them and then he looks at Sam or Danny and they sparkle. Both actors are such talents to convey so much with just their eyes.

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
Come on! It’s bad enough when the PCPD on GH is apparently unable to solve any crimes, but do the writers have to shove it in our faces by going out of their way to make them look even more stupid? I realize that this is “only a soap” but there is no way anyone should be allowed to walk into an interrogation room like Ava Jerome did, pull out a gun, and threaten to kill Griffin for murdering Kiki just to drive story. The outer office was filled with cops, and Ava was allowed to shout at the top of her lungs and no one heard her? Then her brother and lover join her and no one notices? I love this show but I don’t want total incompetence thrown in my face. R.M., San Jose, CA
