GH Fave Reveals Surprising Diagnosis

-

■ In an emotional Instagram post, Risa Dorken (Amy, GH) opened up about her recent bipolar diagnosis. Reading from a prepared statement, she began,

“I was hesitant to share my story at a time like this when everyone is struggling with anxiety, loss, grief and more. But perhaps that is the exact reason to share it.

Because you are not alone.”

Dorken went on to declare, “I’m

Risa, and I have bipolar disorder.” She described how she celebrated her 30th birthday earlier this year while in the grips of “stress, paranoia, fear, anxiety, rage,” but that “I genuinely thought I had never stood toe-to-toe with mental illness or depression.” Then, “My whole universe, life and body changed,” and in February, “I was restrained and put under two involuntary holds. The first one was 72 hours and the second one was for 48 hours. Both a week apart and both I was let out two hours shy for quote, ‘good behavior’, even though I was not stable or better.” In the ensuing weeks, in the throes of what she now knows was a manic episode, Dorken shared, she had harbored various frightening delusions and pondered, among other things, divorcing her husband and moving to France. “I am sharing my experience because as I continue to get in touch with reality and find my way back to myself, back to Risa, I feel helpless,” she continued. “I feel alone. I am now taking a drug I’ve never taken before after a life-changing experience I’ve never experienced with a mental illness I didn’t know I had.” The actress grew tearful and said that she hoped to remind others who were struggling with anxiety and depression during the coronavirus pandemic that they are not alone. “I have struggled, I am struggling, I will struggle in the future. But, I am happy, safe, stable and bipolar .... I still have a lot to learn about all of this, but for now, I am happy to be safe, at home, counting my blessings. May you all be well.”

Several Ghers commented on her post, offering their admiration and support. Donnell Turner (Curtis) wrote, “You are not alone. You are braver, stronger and more loved than you know. Prayers up. Sending positive energy, comfort, blessings and love.” Laura Wright (Carly) said, “Big hugs and love @risadorken You are a gift to us all.” “You are brave and beautiful,” Rebecca Budig (ex-hayden) posted.
