DAYS: Sami And Lucas Are Caught By Kristen
■ In a moment of weakness, Sami opens up to Lucas about the state of her marriage and the two wind up hitting the sheets. “I was really excited,” says Bryan R. Dattilo (Lucas) of the story twist. “I didn’t know how they were going to make it happen but I really commend the writing staff for how they put it together. They gave Lucas a lot of realization and motivation to get into that. I think it was written perfectly on both sides and it meshed very well. So, the initial thing when I saw it was, ‘Sweet, we get to go at it again,’ but then you’re always worried because you have to take your shirt off. So there was a trade-off there at 49 years old, but it also motivates you to stay in shape at a certain level. But I said to [Alison] Sweeney [Sami], ‘I can’t eat now because we have love scenes,’ and she’s like, ‘Dude, that ship has sailed. Don’t even worry about it.’ And only Sweeney can make you feel better by saying something like that — and it did make me feel better! But I think the viewers will get a kick out of it.”
The morning after, Lucas wonders if there could be something more between them. “At first, Lucas is like, ‘Well, it happened and maybe it happened for a reason. Maybe there is something to us again,’ ” Dattilo previews. “Then she’s like, ‘No, idiot! I’m married. I’m in love with somebody else and I want to be there for my husband.’ And she’s very into being loyal and Lucas is like, ‘Well, you already cheated.’ And she’s like, ‘I feel horrible. I can’t look at myself in the mirror.’ So there’s a little bit of that, where he’s trying to convince her that maybe they have a chance to really stay together and not just be a one-time thing, but she’s married and that’s a problem.”
A guilt-ridden Sami worries that EJ could find out. Lucas points out that EJ’S mom, Susan, was the one who let him in the night before, so Sami realizes she has to sneak him out. After she does, Sami comes face to face with “Susan”, who is really Kristen. Kristen uses Sami’s infidelity to blackmail her, saying she will blab to EJ if Sami doesn’t help her keep Chloe away from Brady. Sami reluctantly agrees, then fills in Lucas. “Well, he doesn’t care until Sami says that Kristen is going to run to EJ,” explains the actor. “And once EJ is in the picture, Lucas starts to care because he actually secretly wants EJ to find out, I’m sure.”
Sami adds that Lucas has to romance Chloe to keep her away from Brady. “He doesn’t want to do it,” notes Dattilo. “He likes Chloe in the sense that he doesn’t want to mess with her, but at the same time, he realizes that he really has no choice because the alternative is this whole blowup that might happen. So he goes along with it, as he does with a lot of things, just to make Sami happy and to keep her content, but he also feels badly about what he will have to do to Chloe.”
