Gar­rett H. Shoe­maker

Gar­rett H. Shoe­maker, age 103, died Aug. 27, 2012, at Soud­er­ton Men­non­ite Homes. He was the hus­band of Mar­garet H. Shoe­maker, who died Sept. 2, 2010. At the time of Mar­garet’s death, the cou­ple was mar­ried 76 years.

Born in El­roy, he was the son of the late Gar­ret A. and Cather­ine (Hun­sicker) Shoe­maker.

He spent his early years work­ing in lo­cal cloth­ing shops be­fore at­tend­ing re­frig­er­a­tion and elec­tri­cal school in New York. Af­ter grad­u­a­tion, he worked as a re­frig­er­a­tion and elec­tri­cal me­chanic be­fore em­ploy­ment at Merck Inc., where he was em­ployed for 22 years in that ca­pac­ity.

He was an avid tennis player who en­joyed trav­el­ing. Mr. Shoe­maker was a mem­ber of Zion Men­non­ite Church, Soud­er­ton.

He is sur­vived by two sons, Alan, of Green Lane, and Robert, of At­lanta, Ga.; seven grand­chil­dren; six great-grand­chil­dren; nieces; and neph­ews. In ad­di­tion to his wife, he was pre­ceded in death by three sis­ters, Martha Lan­des, Su­san Sch­moyer and Cather­ine Kulp; and two broth­ers, Henry and Ja­cob.

Rel­a­tives and friends are in­vited to at­tend his funeral ser­vice Fri­day, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m. at Zion Men­non­ite Church, 149 Cherry Lane, Soud­er­ton. No call­ing hour. In­ter­ment fol­lows at Zion Memo­rial Gar­dens.
