Souderton rolls past Methacton

“I looked to the side once or twice, there was a couple big guys running after me,” he said. “My only thought was get in the end zone, outrun those guys.”

Wenger did just that, taking his second pick of Methacton quarterbac­k Brandon Bossard back 95 yards to cap off a 21-point second quarter for the host Indians, who cruised past the Warriors 35-0 in Friday night’s Week 1 non-league matchup.

“I think we played a great game from the start,” Wenger said. “Coaches, they told us just go out here and have fun. Stay loose, don’t WKLnN WRR PuFK. AnG , WKLnN we did a great job.”

AnWKRny WLOOLDPs rusKHG for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, while Jarrett Reinhold and Jon Horton also ran for scores as Souderton (1-0) won its seasRn RSHnHr IRr WKH firsW WLPH since 2008.

“The kids really came out and they had a good mindset from the start,” Indians coach Ed Gallagher said. “They were focused and they took care of business.”

Methacton (0-1) could never get things going on offense, starting the game with a pair of three-and-outs and a turnover as the Big Red built a 21-0 advantage. 7KH WDrrLRrs sHHPHG WR finG some rhythm on one secondquar­ter drive — moving 50 yards down to the Souderton 15 — but that ended with Wenger’s pick six.

“I mean 21-0 is still manageable, somewhat. We’re GrLYLnJ GRwn WKH fiHOG DnG then we get into that situation,” Methacton coach 3DuO LHSrH sDLG. “AnG WKDW’s tough to rebound from.”

The Indians allowed the Warriors just 72 yards of total offense, holding Bossard — who has verbally committed to Eastern Michigan — to 38 yards on 7-of-24 passing.

“They were gashing us pretty good on the defensive

side and hurting us on the offensive side, but I know my guys are never going to quit or give up,” Lepre said. “So, I hope they understand what kind of test we had tonight.”

Dan hnight had 86 yards on 10 carries, while Reinhard collected 72 yards on 13 FDUULHV DV 6RXGHUWRn finished with 323 yards on the ground.

“We run the ball pretty well because we have a great offensive line,” Gallagher said. “Those kids really work hard in the weight room. They’re big, strong kids and they’re experience­d. We got D UHDlly JRRG VWDUW WKRVH fiUVW couple of drives just getting it down there.

“I would like to see us throw the ball a little bit better, but that’s going to come with time.”

For Souderton, the victory wDV WKH fiUVW Ln :HHN 1 VLnFH topping Neshaminy 14-13 four seasons ago. Methacton, meanwhile, has not won its opening contest of the year since beating St. Pius u 32-6 in 2007.

Both teams are home next week. Souderton faces Unionville Friday, while Methacton begins PAC-10 play against Perkiomen Valley Saturday.

Prior to the game, there was a moment of silence for former Indian Derek Brown, a 2010 Souderton graduate who died July 5 from injuries sustained in a car crash June 30.

Souderton held a 7-0 lead DIWHU WKH fiUVW TXDUWHU DV :Llliams capped off an eightplay, 69-yard drive with sixyard touchdown run at 7:46.

The Indians doubled their advantage on the opening play of the second quarter, with Reinhard crossing the goal line on a 10-yard run at 11:54 to end a 12-play, 71yard drive.

:HnJHU’V fiUVW LnWHUFHSWL­Rn set up the next scoring drive for the Big Red, which went ahead 21-0 on Horton’s oneyard run at 9:47. Wenger proceeded to give Souderton a 28-point lead as he picked off Bossard at the Indians’ fiYH WKHn PRWRUHG GRwn the right sideline to the end zone.

Williams provided the only touchdown of the second half on an eight-yard run with 5:28 left in the fourth.
