- By Bob Keeler

tith another hour left to go in Peter Becker Community’s annual penior Health cair, Towamencin camily Chiropractic had already done R0 to 60 surface EMd (electromyographyF scans.

“that it does is it measures the muscle tension along your spine,” said chiropractic assistant sanessa Huston. “It tells how your spine is functioning.”

The scan, which takes about a minute, shows if there are imbalances that can affect not just the spine, but the entire body, she said.

“te’re trying to keep your spine functioning so you have a healthy body,” Huston said.

Megan Amabile, community liaison for Caring Hospice pervices, cort tashington, which serves Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia counties, said she was at the health fair to educate people about hospice.

“pometimes they think there’s just one hospice company. There’s not. There’s a choice,” Amabile said.

Another misconception is that hospice is just for people who are expected to die in the very near future, she said.

“People can be on hospice for quite a while, and the longer they are, the more they’re going to benefiW IURP WKH VHUYiFHV,” $PDEiOH VDiG.

About 40 vendors were at the penior Health cair held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. pept. 12, according to Peter Becker Community sice President of Human oesources Harry McConnell. About 400 people were expected to attend it.

“It’s a way for us to outreach to the community and provide screenings and knowledge,” McConnell said.

“This free event addresses the health needs of seniors by providing health screenings, promoting healthy lifestyle habits and focusing on prevention and education,” according to promo- tional information.

This year’s seminars were “Hobbling Hips, timpy hnees, ppastic ppine” and “How voga Can Help Alleviate Arthritis, Hypertension and lsteoporosis.”

There were also three healthy cooking demonstrations by Ed saron, chef manager, and dinny Henderson, director of dining services.

Along with being shown how to prepare a different food item at each of the sessions — low fat humus in one, low carbohydrate pasta in another and sugar-free blueberry pie in WKH finDO RnH — DWWHnGHHV wHUH given the recipes and a sample.

“Blueberries nowadays are given credit for solving all kinds of health problems,” Henderson said.

That doesn’t mean blueberries have all that’s needed, though, she said, noting that one thing blueberries lack is iron.

“That’s why you have a varied diet,” Henderson said.

Preparing healthy and tasty meals is an important part of providing longterm care, McConnell said.

“In our industry,” he said, “one thing the residents look forward to is their meals, their food.”
