65-pounders Southampton Knights 20, Harleysville Eagles 19: The first half of the game didn’t give the Birds much to celebrate leaving the field down 20-0. A newly energized and determined team took the field to begin the third. The defense took the field and performed well with Curotto, Thorpe and Price making tackles to force the opponent to a three and out. The Birds received the kickoff with Schlipf, Rees, Meenan, Wismer and Carney performing well on special teams and also sharing time on the offense and defense throughout the game. In a great combined effort Wolf, Knapp and quarterback Overpeck moved the ball for two first downs ending in a rushing touchdown by Jonassen. After missing the extra point the Eagles got on the board. The defense came back out to take care of business. Up front play by Hoff, Lemon, Ball and Boccelli took out the Knights in three downs giving the offense the field. This time it only took two plays for Overpeck to score a touchdown behind a line that didn’t quit, the score 20-13. Another threeand-out for the Knights as Guenard and DiCaesar did the work of keeping the Knights penned down. With time running out the Birds got the ball back. The offense came out big driving the ball down field with time running out. Great running and solid passing game lead to a Knapp reception for a touchdown with seconds left on the clock to get the extra point. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be as the Knights line held up ending a superb effort by the Birds. The final score 20-19 in a game that showed that great blocking, tackling and teamwork can do great things.
