Nation at turning point

Souderton Independent - - OPINION -

To the Editor:

We are at a crucial turning point for our nation.

As is, our government is completely broken unless we demand performance and cooperation from our elected RIfiFLDOV. :H FDn nR ORnJHU encourage or tolerate the bullheadedness in our Congress.

I am sure that you are aware that the drafting of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence was never one sided. They took PRnWhV RI “nHJRWLDWLRnV,” ZhLFh ZHUH IuOO RI “FRnFHVsions” from both sides.

Lies and political favors can no longer be tolerated in Congress. Congressmen and senators are there to serve all of us and our nation. This great nation was nearly shut down because of these people being unwilling to negotiate. We have had no real jobs bills from Congress with the exception of the stimulus bill, which the Congressional BuGJHW 2IfiFH HVWLPDWHV FUHated and or saved 1.4 to 3.3 million jobs. A Plutocracy is a nation ruled by a class of people whose power derives from their great wealth.

This is why Obama is the best choice of the two for president. Beyond his reelection, we must demand that Congress both contribute and negotiate with each other. Yes, this is the same Republican-controlled Congress with the dismal 13 percent approval rating. The greatest Republican president of all time, Abraham Lincoln, said in 1858 at his state conYHnWLRn, “$ HRuVH GLYLGHG against itself cannot stand” (a concept familiar to Lincoln’s audience as a statement Jesus recorded in all three synoptic gospels — Matthew, Mark and Luke).

If the Republicans win this next election, we will be well on our way to becoming a Plutocracy. Their increased power will continue to change voting abilities and the corresponding results, reduced health care (more so for women), reduced conVuPHU SURWHFWLRnV — finDncial, food, drug, energy, environmental control — and the GHUHJuODWLRn RI RuU finDnFLDO institutions, which in itself will lead to the next depression.

So think carefully on our nation’s course when you vote.
