Crusaders topple O’Hara

With an offense intent on taking better advantage of its scoring opportunities, the Lansdale Catholic boys soccer team earned a 5-1 win over Philadelphia Catholic League rival Cardinal O’Hara Tuesday afternoon.

“(Finishing) has been our weakness,” Crusaders coach Joe Wilson said. “Every game we played in this year, we controlled the game 80 percent of the time but we hadn’t been DEOH WR fiQLsK. WH ZRrkHG on it, and hope it continues to move along.”

Two goals by Michael Lewis helped the Crusaders get to their second-highest scoring output of the season, as they improved to 2-3 in the PCL and 5-4-1 overall.

“Michael had an excellent game,” Wilson said. “He’s been working very hard and he’s been key in applying pressure and also getting assists.”

Lewis moved into double digits for scoring this fall, notching his ninth and 10th goals of the season.

He broke the scoreless tie about eight minutes into the contest, converting on a pass from John Mechiorie. James Sweriduk scored unassisted to boost the margin to 2-0 by halftime.

O’Hara, in the midst of a rebuilding season, was unable to keep LC out of its end. The Crusaders won their second in a row with constant pressure, and another goal by Lewis shortly after the break extended the Crusaders’ lead to 3-0.

Goals by John Piccini and Chris Quasti gave LC a 5-0 lead with 17 minutes to play, and with about 15 left, Matt Spurrier scored to break the shutout for O’Hara.
