The Bigger Picture
As a subscriber to Sound & Vision for over 10 years, I can honestly say that I haven’t purchased a single piece of A/V equipment—and I’ve purchased a lot—without it first being scrutinized by the S&V team. To say that your periodical has been influential in my life is an understatement. But the reason for my note is to raise an issue I’ve had for a while. I thoroughly enjoy equipment reviews, technology news, and other articles on all things A/ V. But the one thing that S&V doesn’t do is to put the whole enchilada together and showcase actual home theaters. There used to be examples of full-blown home theaters featured in the magazine, but I haven’t seen one example in years. It would be awesome to see various designs, architecture, and layouts of real home theater rooms. Perhaps you could even provide reviews of sound panels and theater chairs? One idea would be to profile a home theater build so we could see it come together over several issues. I’m sure John Sciacca, who does a great job giving advice on installing equipment, could provide you with the content. So, there you have it: input from a long-time subscriber. I have a home theater and am currently looking to rehab the whole room. I would love to see some examples and get inspiration from S&V! Chris Wall Via email
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. We actually do have a home theater installation feature in the pipeline, though that’s not something you should expect to see in every issue. What you’re suggesting would constitute an entire magazine on its own! Meanwhile, I’m in total agreement with your assessment of long-time contributing
editor John Sciacca, who combines custom installation expertise with professional writing chops. John’s Top Design Mistakes series, which wraps up with this issue’s The Connected Life column, provides very useful advice for anyone seeking to install a DIY home theater. I myself have taken several steps to improve my home theater’s hygiene in response to this series. Check it out on page 26.—
