Mitch Ceasar, former chairman, Broward Democratic Party

War hero (although captured), Republican senator and maverick. That was John McCain. His passing leaves an independent voice void. He had my admiration, even though he was a Republican with whom I often disagreed. But his dignity in the face of continual torture was incredible. Later, the disdain he suffered for often chiding his fellow Republicans and later preventing the dismantling of the Affordable Care Act. His “class” was reaffirmed as evidenced by inviting former foes, two Presidents, to speak at his funeral. Naturally one Republican and one Democrat. Who will dissent now?

George Moraitis, chairman, Broward Republican Executive Committee

This week, our country is grieving the death of Sen. John McCain. Sen. McCain dedicated his life to serving our country, starting with attending the U.S. Naval Academy, continuing as Navy fighter pilot and ending as a U.S. senator. As a prisoner of war in Vietnam, he was tortured for his resistance to his captors and his refusal to betray his country. A tireless advocate for our military and veterans, Sen. McCain was a leader in foreign policy, military affairs and the war on terrorism. We lost a great patriot who left behind a legacy of honor and service.

Michael Dennis, M.D., chairman, Florida Atlantic University Schmidt College of Medicine

How many more horrifying shooting disasters will it take before appropriate action is taken to reduce and hopefully eliminate these tragedies? The recent Jacksonville murderer, according to court records, had been twice hospitalized for mental illness and was given anti-psychotic prescriptions. And yet he was able to purchase a .45 caliber and 9mm gun just this month from a licensed dealer in Baltimore. Although a strong believer in the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms, I question why logical purchasing restrictions on the mentally ill are not enforced. And the assault weapons ban should never have been lifted. Anybody agree?

Marty Kiar, Broward County Property Appraiser

Congratulations to Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum on becoming the Democratic nominee for Florida governor! I was honored to endorse Andrew for governor more than a year ago because I wholeheartedly believe he is more than qualified, progressive, dynamic and the best person to lead our great state. Regardless of who you supported in the primary elections or who you will support in the general election, make sure to get out and vote on Nov. 6 and make your voice heard.

Steven Geller, member, Broward County Commission

Comments on Andrew Gillum’s surprise victory. First, it doesn’t show that the Democratic liberal wing prevailed. Gillum ran as a liberal and received 34 percent of the vote. Graham, Levine and Greene ran as centrists and received 62 percent of the vote. The centrist vote was divided. Next, Graham, Levine and Greene all suffered from attack ads, but Gillum wasn’t attacked because he was seen as being in fourth place. Attack ads worked. Finally, I’ve complained about the Bernie voters that didn’t vote for Hillary. It’s time for all Democrats to unite behind Gillum, regardless of who we supported in the primary.

Broward County school teachers and kids won on Tuesday with approval for the half mil property tax increase. The additional funds will go to fund deserved pay increases for teachers and provide for more school resource officers and counselors to help keep our kids safe. Thanks voters!

This is NOT a “global warming” conversation. At least I don’t think it is. I’m talking about the arrival of the “king tides.” It’s almost like the arrival of stone crabs or Canadians, only I don’t remember king tides from when I was a kid! I’ve been on Miami Beach during the king tide and a storm and thought I was going to need a paddle. So, whether it’s global warming or not, the sea level is rising and if we don’t do something about it, there’s gonna be lots more waterfront property down here, but it will be west of U.S.1!

George Hanbury, president, Nova Southeastern University

You may have seen the recent photo and story that went viral about a sea turtle hatchling heading to the ocean but getting stuck in a discarded plastic cup on a Broward County beach. The photo illustrates just how much of an impact we have on the environment and, more specifically, the marine environment that is so precious. So, when you’re at the beach or in one of our parks, be aware of your surroundings, clean up after yourself and help clean up other trash; every little bit helps. To quote Chief Seattle: “Take only memories, leave only footprints.”
