ESPN commentator Dave LaMont emceed the sportsthemed Jeff Conine Celebrity Poker Classic at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Aug. 9. The event included a cocktail reception and live and silent auctions for the 425 guests, with more than 382 of them joining in the poker tournament.
Several current and former professional athletes attended, including Roberto Luongo, Miguel Rojas, Cornelius Bennett, Dennis Martinez, Mark Duper, Roy Foster, Leroy Hoard, Mathias Kiwanuka, Randy Moeller and Gaby Sanchez.
Poker players, including first-prize winner Randal Fernandez, won more than $30,000 in cash and prizes that night. The Miami resident took home $5,000 in cash and a $5,250 seat in the SHRPO $3 Million Guarantee Championship, where he’ll have another chance to test his poker skills.
The biggest winner that night was the beneficiary of the fundraiser, the Conine Clubhouse, where families can stay for free while their children are hospitalized at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The event raised more than $180,000 to underwrite the program’s expenses.
“Cindy and I stayed at the clubhouse when our son was younger and know firsthand the importance of being close to the hospital,” Jeff Conine said in a statement. “It provides all the amenities of a hotel but, more importantly, gives families a temporary place to call home when they need it most.”
