UM dismisses guard Wilson from program

CORAL GABLES — The Hurricanes basketball career of guard Miles Wilson ended before it really even got a chance to start.

Wilson, a transfer from Mount St. Mary’s who sat out last season and never donned a Miami jersey in a game, was dismissed from the Hurricanes men’ s basketball team, UM announced late Friday afternoon.

The school said in a brief statement Wilson’s dismissal stemmed from the fact he was “not meeting team expectations,” though Miami gave no further explanation for coach Jim Larrañaga’s decision.

Before arriving at Miami, Wilson averaged 11.8 points and 3.9 rebounds as a freshman at Mount St. Mary’s. He did not play last season while satisfying NCAA transfer requirements.

Though the sharp-shooting guard figured to get into Miami’s rotation this season, particularly after the departures of Lonnie Walker IV and Bruce Brown, the Hurricanes return veterans Anthony Lawrence, Chris Lykes and DJ Vasiljevic.

Miami also added a graduate transfer in former Florida Gulf Coast standout Zach Johnson. The Hurricanes also expect they will get some help from Wyoming transfer Anthony Mack, who will be eligible to play this season after receiving a hardship waiver from the NCAA.

The redshirt freshman did not play last season at Wyoming while reportedly dealing with concussionlike symptoms.

The Hurricanes, who are coming off a 22-10 season, are seeking their fourth straight NCAA Tournament berth. They will open the season with a home game at the Watsco Center on Nov. 9 against Lehigh.

Miami will begin ACC play on Jan. 3 against North Carolina State.
