Tagovailoa tops Tide’s TD pass list

-

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa became the school’s all-time leader in career touchdown passes with his first touchdown pass on Saturday against No. 24 Texas A&M, ESPN.com reported.

Tagovailoa, who entered the game tied with A.J. McCarron atop the school’s all-time list with 77 touchdown passes, connected with sophomore receiver Jaylen Waddle for a 31-yard scoring completion in the first quarter to pass McCarron.

Tagovailoa completed 21 of 34 passes for 293 yards and four TDs to power Alabama to a 47-28 win.

Michigan survives: Hassan Haskins ran for 125 yards and a touchdown, Zach Charbonnet added 116 yards rushing, and No. 16 Michigan needed a late surge to hold off Illinois 42-25.

The Wolverines (5-1, 3-1 Big Ten) built a 28-0 lead by halftime, but turnovers and ineffective offense helped the Illini (2-4, 0-3) cut the lead to 28-25 with 12:50 left in the fourth quarter when Dre Brown ran in from a yard out and then converted a 2-point conversion.

Michigan responded with a long drive capped by Shea Patterson’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones. Patterson ran for a score after Michigan forced a turnover at the Illini 1 to seal it.

“We rose to the challenge,” Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh said. “But yeah, it got interesting for a while there.”

Matt Robinson, starting for injured quarterback Brandon Peters — a graduate transfer from Michigan — was 16 of 25 for 192 yards and one touchdown for Illinois. He also ran for a score.

Michigan racked up 489 yards total offense to Illinois’ 256.

Cincy holds off Cougars: Desmond Ridder passed for 263 yards and three touchdowns and No. 25 Cincinnati held off Houston's late surge to beat the Cougars 38-23.

The Bearcats (5-1, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) used a 21-point first half to pull away early and Perry Young's late 2-yard interception return for a touchdown sealed their fourth straight win.

Ridder finished 14 of 24 for 263 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Ridder also had 11 carries for 50 yards and a score.

The Cougars (2-4, 0-2) cut the lead to five with 9:09 left on Clayton Tune's 6-yard pass to Christian Trahan, but it wasn't enough to prevent Houston's first 0-2 start in conference play since joining the AAC.

Turnovers doom Memphis: Anthony Russo threw two TD passes and Temple took advantage of four turnovers to upset No. 23 Memphis 30-28.

Brady White passed for 355 yards and two scores for Memphis (5-1, 2-1 AAC), which fell behind 16-0.

The win was secured when an apparent diving catch by Tigers TE Joey Magnifico to convert a fourth-and-11 was overturned by instant replay with 1:50 to play in the fourth. It would have placed Memphis inside the Temple 30, but instead the Owls (5-1, 2-0) ran out the clock.

“I thought he laid out,” Tigers coach Mike Norvell said. ”I thought he had his arms underneath it. I know there was movement within the ball but that's a pretty big Jumbotron and it looked like his arm was underneath it. They did call it a catch on the field, and so I guess they had a more conclusive angle to decide that it need to be overturned.”

Memphis’ Kenneth Gainwell had eight catches for 98 yards and rushed 19 times for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Tussle at Red River rivalry: The entire teams for No. 6 Oklahoma and 11thranked Texas were issued an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty 30 minutes before the annual Red River rivalry.

The teams gathered near midfield, and officials were already trying to keep them separated when the groups got close. Quite a few players were face-to-face when the flag flew. Referee Mike Defee announced the penalty, and the warning of an ejection for any more unsportsmanlike calls.

Defee reissued the warning to the captains during the coin flip: “We're going to play this game with sportsmanship. Are we clear?”

Oregon’s Hebert ups streak: QB Justin Hebert extended his streak of games with a TD pass to 34 after throwing for two scores as No. 13 Oregon ripped Colorado 45-3 on Friday night.

Hebert, who completed 18 of 32 passes, has the longest streak of games with a TD pass in the nation. He has 17 TD passes this season for Oregon (5-1), which is 3-0 in the Pac-12 for the first time since 2013.

Virginia’s Hall carted off: Preseason All-American CB Bryce Hall suffered an injury to his lower left leg and was carted off the field during the second quarter during No. 20 Virginia’s 17-9 loss to Miami on Friday night.

Hall returned to the Cavaliers (4-2, 2-1 ACC) for his senior season after leading all FBS players with 22 pass breakups in 2018.
